  • 22  Artist Fateh Al-Moudarres, was born in the village of Huritan, near the city of Aleppo, in northern Syria, from an Arab father who belonged to a land-lord family known as (Al-Moudarres) and to a Kurdish mother. He lived in an Arab, Kurdish and Turkmen peasants’ communities in rural area. The paradox is that he did not live an affordable life as he suffered from the scarcity of living, especially after the killing of his father and having to move between his Kurdish maternal uncles in the villages of northern Syria, which dug deep psychological effects on his life, and impacted his psychological, behavioral attitude, and his art and literature works too.
  • As he entered the primary stage to study in northern Syria, he began to show his talent for drawing, and the teacher of art class, whose name is “Sharif Bayrakdar,” noticed, and he also had tendencies in poetry, literature, story, travel literature, and music, and in “Al-Maamoun High School” his relationship with arts teachers was strengthened and among them were “Munib Naqshbandi”, “Ghaleb Salem” and “Wehbe Al Hariri” who educated him, cared about him and taught him the principles of the arts.
  • 1940 He traveled to Lebanon and studied English at the American University of Beirut.
  • After graduating from the university, he returned to Syria, specifically in Aleppo, to work as an English teacher and Art teacher, and he wrote poems and published them in magazines and newspapers.
  • 1952 He participated in the Syrian Artists Exhibition in Damascus and won the first prize in painting.
  • 1954 He wrote a three-part book on the history of art.
  • 1956 He traveled to complete his studies at the Royal Academy in Rome after obtaining a scholarship, where he started his studies in the studio of professional Italian artist "Gentilini", who was inclined to metaphysical expression in a structural way and with color combinations and configurations that distinguished the style of this artist from others. He met in Rome with the French existential philosopher "Jean-Paul Sartre" and admired him and translated some of his poems into Arabic, he formed a network of cultural, literary and artistic relations with many Arab and European intellectuals.
  • 1960 He won the first prize from the Royal Academy in Rome.
  • 1961 After returning from Rome to Damascus, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty of Fine Arts.
  • 1962 He won the gold medal from the Italian Senate.
  • 1963 He was honored with the prize of honor at the São Paulo Biennial in Brazil.
  • 1972 He received his doctorate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris and participated in an exhibition in Rome.
  • 1976 He participated in an exhibition with the artist Louay Kayali at the Aleppo Museum.
  • 1977 He received a professorship chair at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus and won the golden sail of Arab artists in Kuwait.
  • 1986 He won the state award for fine arts in Damascus.
  • 1992 He won the state award for fine arts in Jordan.
  • 1999 The artist passed away at the age of seventy-seven years.
  • 2005, after his death, he was awarded the Syrian Order of Merit.
  • He was a member of the Syrian Fine Arts Syndicate
